Einkaufen in den Niederlanden
How much does a m³ of gas cost in Holland?
The gas price in the Netherlands is calculated per cubic metre (m³) and consists of the supplier’s delivery price, government taxes (Energy Tax / Energiebelasting) and 21% VAT. The actual price depends on the type of contract (fixed, variable or dynamic) and the chosen supplier.
As of January/February 2026, the average gas price for new contracts is approximately:
-
around €1.10 – €1.20 per m³ for dynamic or competitively priced fixed contracts
-
around €1.20 – €1.30 per m³ for 1- to 3-year fixed contracts
These prices include Energy Tax and VAT, but exclude fixed base and grid charges.
For comparison:
-
Until autumn 2021, gas prices were around €1.00 per m³.
-
In autumn 2022, prices temporarily exceeded €4.50 per m³.
Since 2023, gas prices have largely normalized again, but they remain volatile due to factors such as weather conditions, gas imports (LNG), and developments on European gas markets.
Energy Tax on Gas
As of 1 January 2026, the Energy Tax on gas amounts to €0.73 per m³.
This rate applies up to an annual consumption of 5,000 m³ for gas meters classified as G6 or smaller. The former renewable energy surcharge (ODE) has been fully integrated into the Energy Tax.
Households also receive an annual fixed tax reduction, which is credited through the annual energy bill.
Note
Gas prices may change at short notice. A precise forecast is not possible, as pricing depends heavily on the supplier, contract type and overall market conditions.
